NOTES

  • In 1881, John Kindred Yeats (stonemason) was listed as a visitor at Hill House.
  • In 1883, John left Jane and the two boys and sailed to Canada, returning in 1884.
  • Around 1900, the family moved from Alston to Brampton, and a few years later to 37 Melbourne Road in Carlisle.
  • Around 1907, John Kindred sailed to Canada again, working mainly in the Calgary area.
  • The cemetery in Chinook, Alberta, is the resting place for John Kindred and Jane Yeats. It is located about 1/4 mile south of the old town of Chinook, located on top of a hill overlooking the old townsite.
  • When visited on August 14, 1998, the headstone was missing (I later learned that there had never been a headstone placed at the site). There is a nameplate with the name 'Yeats' on it at the foot of the plot. At the head of the plot there was a concrete slab buried under about 4 inches of dirt and plant growth, which I removed. This slab was bare, so the headstone probably sat on it.
  • There was evidence that the concrete surrounding the plot had been painted at one time, with some white paint still showing. On the inner portion of the plot, there were initials and a date - 'HY 1983'. As Harold Yeats had written to me, he had painted the plot and had also painted his initials on the reverse of the concrete.
  • Pictures were taken of the site in 1998, and are included in this notation.
  • Prior to Floyd Yeats' death, he had ordered a headstone for the gravesite. It was completed after and placed in the Chinook Cemetery by Floyd's daughter and son-in-law, Terry and Barry.
  • On April 21, 2005, I obtained a copy of the Homestead application and related documents from the Alberta Provincial Archives.

"Obituary: From the Chinook Advance dated May 7, 1925:

    "Mrs. Jane Moffat Yeats

"It is with regret that we announce the death of Mrs. Jane Moffatt (sic) Yeats, wife of K. T. Yeats of Chinook; who passed away on Sunday, May 3, at the age of 69. The deceased had been in failing health for the past four years, and five days before her death she had a stroke and from that time little hope was entertained for her recovery. Mrs. Yeats was born at Dunfrieshire, Scotland, on May 23, 1856. She came to Chinook in 1916. The late Mrs. Yeats is survived by her husband and three sons and five daughters: Thompson Yeats of Carlisle, England; George Yeats, of Calgary; Archie Yeats, Chinook; Mrs. C. H. Rigg of Carlisle England; Mrs. L. W. Kennedy, of Taft, California; Mrs. J. A. Spreight, of Midland Vale, Alta.; Mrs. G. W. England, Red Deer, Alta.; Mrs. F. McKenzie, Marsden, Sask.; and seventeen grandchildren. The funeral which was held on Wednesday afternoon from the Chinook Church, was largely attended; being represented by friends from the town and country. The services at the church and gravesite were conducted by Rev. R. T. Harden, of Cereal, and Mr. A. O. McNeil, pastor of Chinook Church. The pallbearers were L. S. Dawson, Jas. Rennie, D. McKenzie, I. W. Deman, S. H. Smith and L. Robinson.

"The deepest sympathy is extended to Mr. Yeats and family in their great sorrow."
